Our Curriculum

Here at St Joseph’s we understand that children happily learn whilst naturally playing. We recognise the importance of a planned, well resourced environment that offers safe but challenging play experiences and opportunities to suit all children.

When  planning and guiding children’s activities, we consider the characteristics of effective teaching and learning  and the different ways that children learn and reflect these in to our practice .

Three characteristics of effective teaching and learning are:

  •  playing and exploring – children investigate and experience things, and ‘have a go’.
  •  active learning – children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties, and enjoy achievements.
  •  creating and thinking critically – children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing things Children learn and develop through their play.

Your child will be assessed in each of these areas during their play to enable us to understand how we can best support them in the next steps of their learning journey. We will complete a Two Year Progress Check to identify your childs strengths and any areas that they may need support in. When appropriate, we will seek advice from external agencies and work closely with them to ensure that we are achieving the best level of support for our children from the start. We understand the importance of early intervention and how making it our priority can improve the outcomes and future success of the children in our care.

Reading

Two-year-olds can often follow a simple story and love joining in with lively actions or guessing what will happen on the next page.

Each week your child will bring home a story for you to share at home.

Stories are a fantastic - and fun - way to introduce toddlers to everyday activities, too.
